Dremel and most other rotary-tool manufacturers use a rare thread size on their tools. I can't even remember what it was. While you can buy a tap that would fit it, they're hard to find and just about the cost of a Stew Mac base if I remember correctly. Also, you're likely to use it once, and that's no way to save money.

My Dremel model 328 from 1987 is 20 mm by 2.5 mm pitch, My Dremel model XPR 400 2008, is 3/4 inch and 12 TPI. I have no idea why the 1987 dremel is metric and the XPR 400 is imperial. The moulded thread on the XPR 400 measures .741 to .746 diameter.It is not round.

I've tried to measure the thread myself with the following results: - Pitch: a bit over 2 mm, so probably 12 TPI, but measuring over just three crests is not too exact. - Diameter: I get 18.2.18.6 mm, which works out to something like 47/64" which is totally weird.
