This is a beautiful church - "Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor" - built right after the "Reconquista", by order of the Catholic Kings in 1486. It was built over the remains of the 13th century old Mosque in the Moorish Medina of Ronda - the actual "Plaza de la Duquesa de Parcent".

Santa María La Mayor, joya arquitectónica de Ronda
Work began in 1485 and was finally completed in the late 17th century. An earthquake in 1850 unfortunately destroyed part of the original construction and reconstruction works had to be carried out. Inside the church is an arch that was part of the mihrab (prayer niche that indicates the direction of Mecca) of the Moorish mosque.
